Workshop: Making Meaning in Museums - Making Space for Participative Practice

How do you create more space for the community engagement you do - in your organisation, in your sector, in your writing? The Centre for Critical Studies in Museums, Galleries and Heritage at Leeds University is hosting this practical workshop to collaboratively explore this question. It follows the recent seminar of the same title at the British Museum which explored locating museum participation and co-creative practice within the more established methodologies of action and participatory research. Both provide thought and practice frameworks for understanding all the multiple ways of knowing, finding and creating information in museums as variations of research. After those initial discussions the workshop focuses on practical ways of using action and participatory research in our day to day practice to advocate for and create more space for the participative work we do. The day will be an in-depth exploration of techniques we might already be using in our practice and a collaborative inquiry into how we can build on those, using ideas from collaborative and action research. This workshop is one of three identical workshops held in: Brighton - 10 November 2017 Leeds - 19 January 2018  Glasgow - March 2018 (registration open from mid December) Places are limited and will be awarded on a first come first serve basis.  Our aim is to each leave with an individual action inquiry idea to try out in our practice. We will discuss on the day ways of afterwards sharing our experiences of experimental actions. The content produced is intended to build the basis for a collaborative publication.  For those who need it we have a limited number of travel bursaries to offer. Background information: The workshops are part of a new research project initiated at the British Museum. The project is a collaboration between researchers from the British Museum and partners from the University of Leeds and Brighton & Hove Museums. It originated in a shared interest in the conceptualisations and effects of different ways of producing knowledge in museums and how to better frame participatory practice as research.
